New Driver License 18+
Follow the steps below to obtain an Oklahoma Class D Driver License for the first time as an adult (18+).

Eligibility
All applicants must be at least 18 years old
Learner Permit not expired past 3 years
- If your permit has been expired over 3 years, you will be required to retake the written and drive tests
- If you have never posessed a learner permit, follow the steps below

How to Apply for a Driver License
Written Test
Be sure to prepare for the written test by studying the Oklahoma Driver Manual
Bring the following documents to your visit:
- One Proof of Identity - You can find the list of acceptable primary identification documents here.
- Social Security Number - this number will not appear on your license.
- Driver Education Completion Certificate (optional) - In order to waive the written test, you can bring in a Driver Education completion certificate (from a commercial or public school). For more information on Driver Education courses, view available schools here.
- Name Change Document (if applicable) - If the last name to be entered on the Oklahoma License is different from the name on the Primary ID, the applicant must bring in a document showing a legal name change.
Visit a Service Oklahoma Licensing Office
Schedule a Class D Written Test by selecting 'A. Learner's Permit/Class D Written Test' after clicking the 'Find a location' button below. A vision test will also be administered during your written test visit.
Plan Ahead for Your Drive Test
Before scheduling a drive test, you must have passed the vision and written tests.
For the driving portion of your test:
- View the Vehicle Inspection Checklist
- The car must pass a vehicle inspection (as outlined in 3-2 of the Oklahoma Driver Manual)
- The car must have a valid registration (tag)
- Present proof of insurance (security verification form)
Note
No pets or additional people can be in the car with you and the examiner.

Take the drive test
During the drive test, the Driving Examiner will tell you where to drive and what driving maneuvers to perform. See FAQ for additional information on the specifics of the drive test.

If you do not feel adequately prepared for the drive test, or just want some additional practice, you can apply for a Learner Permit before taking the drive test. See more information about learner permit eligibility and privileges below.
Pay the fees
If you pass the drive test, and are paying with a credit card, the license will be printed at the Service Oklahoma Licensing Office location. If you are paying with cash or a money order, you will have to visit the nearest Licensed Operator to get your license printed.
Fees
Passing the Drive Test
The fee to print and issue a first time Driver License is $42.50. Please be prepared to pay this fee.
Failing the Drive Test
If you do not pass the drive test, there will be a $4.00 fee in addition to the issuance fee added to your total for each individual drive test taken.
Practice First with a Learner Permit
If you do not feel adequately prepared for the drive test, or just want some additional practice, you can apply for a Learner Permit before taking the drive test. To apply for a Learner Permit as an adult (18+) you must:
Pass a vision test and either take the written test OR bring a Driver Education Completion Certificate to your visit
If you bring a Driver Education Completion Certificate from a public, private or parochial school, or a commercial driver education school to your skills test visit, the written test will be waived.
Hold your Learner Permit for 30 days

Note
Any adult who has held a Learner Permit for 30 days and completed a Driver Education course from a public, private, or a commercial driver education school, is also eligible to take the drive test from a certified designated examiner for a fee of $25.00.
Frequently Asked Questions
The Examiner will tell you where to drive and what driving maneuvers to perform. You must show that you can:
• Control the car
• Properly perform basic maneuvers such as turning right and left, backing, parking
on a hill, parallel parking, etc.
• Use signals and drive in the proper lane
• Understand and obey traffic signs, markings, and signals
• Properly apply the rules of right-of-way
• Carefully observe and correctly respond to other vehicles and pedestrians
The drive test will not be conducted when roads are considered by the examiner to be slick or hazardous.
You can re-take the drive test up to three times, each time at least one day apart or as instructed by the examiner.
If you fail the third drive test, you will have to wait 30 days before taking the test a fourth time.
The fourth attempt and any thereafter should be taken no more than one time every 30 days.
*The 30 days starts from the last drive test date.
You can drive between 5:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. and must be accompanied by a licensed driver at least 21 years old.
You only need to schedule a written test. The vision test will automatically be administered during your appointment for the written test.
